Eco-terrorism or negligence

It looks like the current environmental disaster that came down on the coast of Israel in the form of massive oil pollution is of human-caused origin. And a well-definite party, Iran, had a hand in it, because it has threatened to wipe out the Jewish state long ago. However, without being able to do it through military means, it is not afraid to use such dirty tricks as a veritable environmental terrorism. It is that definition which the Minister of Ecology Gila Gamliel said during her press conference in Jerusalem. According to her, a ship called Emerald was implicated in that act. About a month before the accident, this ship left the Iranian port and passed through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean Sea. And what is particularly interesting, when entering the economic waters of Egypt, the tanker’s automatic identification system was off for almost 24 hours. Then, during the passage through the canal, it was turned on, but when coming to the Israeli economic zone, it was turned off again. On its own, this looks suspicious, and if we take into account that three weeks after the tanker’s passage, oil began to be cast ashore, this is doubly suspicious. Yes, there is no direct evidence that it was a deliberate action, and Israel hasn’t officially pressed charges against Iran yet. However, the coincidences are too strange to be ignored. For this reason, the chairman of Jerusalem Hand Organization Baruch Leviev, categorically insists on conducting a thorough investigation with the involvement of international organizations and countries neighboring Iran. After all, it is entirely possible that next time they will become victims of such accident. In addition, the organization also urges to demand compensation from Iran for what happened. Even assuming that it was the result of unintentional mishaps, such as an emergency or an accident, the damage caused to nature is really great. The Chernobyl accident consequences liquidator’s day is a holiday and oblivion at the same time

December 14 is the day when people honor the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident consequences that happened in 1986. The “Jerusalem Hand” Organization, remembers the heroes of those days and hopes that in Israel people will take better care of them than today. Three and a half decades ago, hundreds of millions of people were in mortal danger. Then, in April 1986, the exploded reactor power unit of the Chernobyl NPP threatened the safety of living across vast territories. The dedicated efforts of rescuers who came to the scene of the accident from all republics of the USSR, which existed at that time, prevented a catastrophe on the truly planetary scale. And then, in record time, the Shelter was built over the destroyed reactor, that is a complex of protection structures that prevented radiation leaks into the external environment. The day when the Shelter was put into operation – December 14, subsequently became Liquidator’s Day. This day was not immediately recognized as an official holiday. In Russia, the decision about it was made only in 2012, while Ukraine began to celebrate it earlier, since 2006. Which is not surprising, because about half of 650 thousand liquidators of the accident consequences lived on its territory at that time. There, people remember and honor those who, at the cost of their health, and sometimes even their lives, saved millions of people from deadly radiation. But unfortunately, the same cannot be said for some other countries in which liquidators live today. Since the late 1980s, more than 4,000 participants in the events of 1986 have repatriated to Israel. Not all of them are alive today – only about 1200 people. Alas, their merits were not recognized by the authorities, which actually did nothing for them. Although the Knesset adopted the law on liquidators in 2001, in practice it isn’t implemented. For example, the status of the liquidator itself is absent in the country today. Being a rescue organization, the “Jerusalem Hand” honors everyone who prevented the tragedy at the Chernobyl NPP in due time. Both those who has left us and the living ones. But the last ones, in addition to respect, also need real help in solving their problems. International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development (5 December)

Volunteers are a pivotal part of our society. Since the dawn of time, society has been incentivized by fiscal gain. But volunteers are the only individuals who have broken this norm time and time again and have come to aid the public in times of turmoil. The news has always paid tribute to the volunteers for all their social work, whether it is front-line as an essential worker or helping vulnerable neighbors; volunteers have always been there. We like to thank our Volunteers from the bottom of our hearts for their contribution to the Economic and Social Development of the entire world. They have always been available and have worked tireless days and nights for the betterment of our society. Sometimes, Volunteers might feel like they are not being appreciated enough for their hard work. In those times, we want them to know that we are proud of them. The organization that they work for, their parents, their families, and friends all are extremely proud that they can be affiliated with such honorable and selfless individuals who have dedicated so much of their time, effort, and energy towards a cause they believe in. Political change might be a way to solve community healthcare problems

The state of medicine in a country is one of the indicators of its level of development. Unfortunately, many countries in the world cannot boast of truly effective and at the same time affordable and yet available medical care. The statistics shows that almost all countries in the post-Soviet territory are in this category. According to the information officially published by WHO, none of them are among the leaders in terms of health care and they are significantly lagging behind. This causes sincere concern among humanitarian organizations, whose activities are closely related to medicine. Moreover, the world has been gripped by the coronavirus pandemic for almost a year, which started spreading in the spring and today has returned again as a second wave. The sudden increase in the number of people infected with the urgent need for hospitalization revealed many problems with hospital facilities in the CIS countries. In addition to the catastrophic shortage of places in them, it turned out that a majority of them does not have modern equipment, they do not provide necessary medicines and consumables. In addition to that, hospitals are often not even staffed with the required medical staff. The International Israeli Rescue Organization Jerusalem Hand is aware of the real situation, which causes serious concern to it. This is especially for Republic of Moldova, which, unfortunately, is a total outsider in the ranking of European healthcare. In addition to the low quality of medical care for the residents of the Republic of Moldova, it is often simply inaccessible and unavailable. The public health insurance system is poorly developed, while private services are not cheap. Very often, unlike Germany, Austria or Sweden, people with low incomes in Moldova simply do not receive any medical care at all. But in these mentioned countries there are special programs and whole systems of assistance for such categories of the population. Experts name several reasons for this state of affairs, and above all, insufficient funding. But no less important is the low transparency of the medical sector in Moldova as a whole, which leads to a real confusion in the pricing of services, medicines and examinations. It seems that this situation can be resolved only through a decisive reform of the industry, since any incomplete or half-hearted measures will only make the situation even worse. World Tsunami Awareness Day (5th November)

The head of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction welcomed the resolution adopted by the General Assembly recognizing 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day. Many disasters would not happen and many lives and livelihoods would be saved if there was greater public awareness of the threats posed by natural hazards such as tsunamis. Tsunami Awareness Day will help to focus attention on measures which can be taken to reduce risks from both man-made and natural hazards and to ensure that more people live and work in places which are free from the threat not just of tsunamis but other sudden onset hazards such as earthquakes, floods and storms. The proposal was first suggested by the Japanese Government after the Third UN Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in Sendai in March this year. Japan has suffered heavy losses as a result of tsunamis, most recently the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami of 11 March 2011, which claimed over 15,000 lives, disrupted the nuclear power industry and left many thousands homeless. It should be remembered that the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which claimed some 230,000 lives from countries across the world galvanised political commitment to reducing disaster risk and disaster losses.
