Five years After Haiti’s Earthquake, where died 230 thousand people

In Haiti, the death toll from a powerful earthquake that occurred on 12 January 2010 exceeded 230 thousand people. This was reported by the Minister of Communications of the island nation, Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lasegue. According to her, this sad statistic is not yet final. Part of the victims had been buried in the first days after the disaster of their family members, the minister pointed out.

Prime Minister of Haiti, Jean-Max Bellerive said that the January earthquake had already set a record for the number of casualties as a result of any natural disaster on the two American continents.

State of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) decided to create a special fund of $ 100 million, funds from which will be spent on the reconstruction of Haiti. This decision was recorded in the final declaration of emergency in Quito meeting of representatives of UNASUR. The document expresses solidarity with the people of Haiti UNASUR.

President of the Presidency of the UNASUR Ecuador Rafael Correa also called on all creditors to cancel Haiti’s foreign debt, amounting to about $ 1.3 billion. The participants agreed to create a South American team of solidarity and cooperation for the elimination of the consequences of possible disasters in the region in the future.
